What is a SCRAP Sighting?
A SCRAP sighting is someone’s observation of a structure, culture, rule, assumption or process that may be organizational SCRAP.
Why is this important
- To have a common, shared way to communicate, clarify, prioritize, and work on SCRAP
- To emphasize continuously that something that appears as SCRAP to one person, may not appear to someone else as SCRAP (it may have value to some people)
- To make it really simple and logical to clarifying any SCRAP sighting when it occurs. Hopefully this encourages doing the work on it (Part 2)
- Encourage exploration and validation that involves other kinds of stakeholders before jumping to conclusions or making local decisions.
Why this is powerful
- De-weaponizes the sharing of SCRAP: it’s an observation, not a declaration or accusation. Whereas a “report” does something else entirely: blame, wrongdoing, conflict, punishment, etc.
- Objective. You describe what you observe. Making meaning from that is separate.
