”Lean-Agile Way”
Haven’t read it. But seeing a SAFe “fellow” and PMI person as one of the authors, unless things have changed… it’s been awhile, but SAFe just looks like RUP (Rational Unified Process) to me. Nothing inherently wrong, but it’s not lean/agile. It’s what PMO’s and Executives want lean/agile to be. So they can have their up front planning and control. Basically Scrum-erfall. But I admit I haven’t looked into it since its early days. I just remember seeing it as repackaging RUP.
Most of SAFe’s roots are (literally) the RUP, so I hear ya.
That is one of my concerns about the book. This is not directly related to SCRAP - it came up at a client that is trying to bridge the Lean manufacturing : Agile software development divide.
Now that I think about it, there IS a SCRAP connection.
One criticism of SAFe is that with all of its process and structures, it preserves too much of the organization as it is now, and does not result in real change as a result. In our terms here, based on that criticism, SAFe protects/perpetuates the SCRAP by giving it new names and terminology. Thoughts?
Agreed that SAFe preserves too much of the SCRAP riddled organization. It does provide a faster feedback cycle than waterfall though with its quarterly planning cycle but because of their lack of systems thinking in dependency management they continue to fail to deliver to plan.
