The AIs are taking over.
I believe that Org SCRAP is a distinction that can help as companies learn about AI, how to leverage it, and more.
Here’s a decent Gothelf post on AI that touches upon it & free tool he shares.
This post has me thinking of the relationship between Culture and Strategy which leads me to think:
Are these relationships worth mapping out?
I think all of these questions are worth exploring further - especially if we see some patterns or otherwise learn something that can help people dealing with those things. Such learnings and patters get added to the collection, and some might inform the model or paradigm itself if fundamental enough.
AI throws an interesting wrench into the equation. It’s a dilemma because the AI scene is full of change and not settling. The promise of AI hasn’t materialized for businesses, and it throws more headaches, security for one. AI is not unhackable, and experts think it never will be. You want your AI to be more effective, you need to give it more data, if you give it more data, anyone with access to the AI can get it out. All the major providers continue to get prompt injected. So how do established companies move forward fast. Look at Apple’s failed 2 year attempt at trying to implement AI. They even sold people on phones with Apple Intelligence. They just signed a $1 billion annual contract with Google to replace Siri with a custom version of Gemini. There is so much risk, any company that is risk averse is going to be careful, but smaller competitors will figure it out. And start to take market share from larger companies.
With software being a commodity, soon. I see companies like Salesforce and other large Saas companies going to be hit the most. I’ve already talked to other CEO’s who feel like they would be better off building their own CRM and importing their salesforce data. Because the millions they spend a year on licensing and the specialized developers they need, it’s not worth it. It’s just better if they use AI to develop their own internal apps.
One area I see SCRAP being assisted with AI, is we can build a SCRAP assistant that’s trained on SCRAP and when people are submitting issues, it could help categorize, and ask deeper questions that the users could answer, and it identifies solutions in a matter of fact unemotional way. Like in the other discussions where Tom has pointed out Leader being offended by SCRAP being brought up or being defensive. It keeps it matter of fact, and maybe people would be more receptive to an AI agent telling them what to do. This is something I could build. Could be a way to monetize and even a lead magnet on the website that people could have discussions, learn about SCRAP, maybe share one of their stories, etc… and get some analysis from the SCRAPPY agent. It can be like the Trash Heap character from Fraggle Rock, lol. Remember that kids show, haha.
@SeanWBuck Have you seen Dave Snowden’s Sensemaking tool? I saw it years ago in pre-AI days but it sounds like a tool for capturing data that might able to be consumed by AI to identify SCRAP.
Familiar with the Cynefin framework but haven’t seen the tool. Tried to look it up. A bunch of marketing language and sign up for consulting to be able to use it, it seems. It’s interesting though from what I can read about it, bringing in the human perspective to the data.
Data collection for Sensemaker comes in the form of stories from members within an organization. The members are asked to map out their stories to a quadrant (sorry, I don’t recall the coordinates of the quadrant). The resulting output is used to in understanding the nature of their complex system. Could be good input for determining SCRAP…
