What would a senior leader in an organization with significant challenges - the majority of which were some form of Org SCRAP - benefit from seeing?
I think a side-by-side is always useful: on the one hand, we show what existing models and conventional approaches would have to say about the challenges they face, and on the other hand, the SCRAP hand, we show how “our” approach results in not only a different perspective but more importantly, very different results.
@Richard I like this. Reminds me of the quote: “Your system is perfectly designed to give you the results you are getting.”
I can see the left hand column being existing systems or maybe policies. Then an arrow pointing to a middle column of undesirable effects. I suggest that a heading above the arrows be something like “Local optimizations causes…”.
The right hand column could be something like “Global Optimization Practices". I can’t think of an elegant title for arrows pointing back at the undesirable effects, maybe something like “Breaks the Contraint of…”.
What if we used the same Acronyms, sort of like a root cause analysis. S - Symptoms (what are the unhealthy symptoms that are observed) C - Category/Cause (What about the Structure, Culture, Rules, Assumptions, Processes are the issue) R - Resolutions (Some solutions to resolve the symptoms) - A/P - Actions/Plan (what Plan and actions need to be taken to resolve the issue) - That’s what I’d like to see. Could even have the A be Analysis. Like why the resolution would solve the SCRAP issues, but what else to be cognizant of… To make sure it solves the issues and doesn’t create other issues, and P being a recommended Plan to address the SCRAP.
A one pager that is high-level, concise, and visual so that they get the “so what” immediately and it compels them to take action. Perhaps a heat map that shows based on percentage of respondents what’s most pressing for their org and what area will have the most impact if it’s fixed. Most importantly the execs aren’t in the day to day so some of the things raised may not mean something to them and they won’t be the ones to make decisions, so it should be accompanied by a summary of what the impact or implication of not solving the problem means to them. Most likely they will forward this report on to their leaders who may deny that the items surfaced are a problem. The goal is there’s enough data that those leaders can’t punt on doing the work. Some things individuals bring up they don’t have context and it may not be SCRAP while other things are. So categorizing or up leveling themes will make it more digestible.
Thanks Sean- this gets into the sighting itself, which was definitely what I asked. I think I need to split this topic- one into the “sighting” card for each sighting of SCRAP, and the other being some kind of information radiator for execs and others who are not involved yet- to get them interested and draw them in (which would be more aggregated). I will create another topic for one of these.

Great points. I am creating a separate topic for the individual “sightings” that will be more specific about what is needed for analysis etc. I renamed this topic to “SCRAP Information Radiator” to continue what @Mnhoang is talking about. The intent is to come up with something that is immediately meaningful and informative and interesting to get the conversation going about what I am calling “SCRAP Piles” and overall impact.
